Lisa Gorham – Why I Ride

I have always had a fascination with motorcycles. My earliest recollection goes all the way back to when I was in third grade. My family lived in Kendall Park, NJ in the kind of neighborhood where kids walked to school and played in each others’ yards. One such yard was at the home of Eddie and Laurie M where, under a tarp, was their mysterious motorcycle. It was hands off, of course, so the thrill of peeking under the tarp was always there. Come to think of it, I don't ever re-member seeing Mr. M ride. Continue reading

Is Centers for Disease Control trying to reduce motorcycle use?

U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) is asking the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whether it is trying to reduce motorcycle ridership by pursuing a federal mandatory motorcycle helmet law, the American Motorcyclist Association reports. The congressman also is questioning the economic impacts the CDC cited to support mandatory motorcycle helmet laws. In a letter to CDC Director Thomas Frieden (enclosures included) dated Nov. 21, Walberg, who is a lifelong motorcyclist, an AMA life member and a member of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus, asked “…is it the goal or strategy of the CDC to reduce the use of motorcycles -- a legal mode of transportation -- by recommending and pursuing a federal helmet law? Harley Davidson Street 750 and Street 500

The Street 750 and Street 500 from Harley-Davidson represent the first all-new platform from Harley-Davidson in 13 years. Built for urban environments, the Street series machines fall under the Dark Custom design and are intended for young, urban riders. The two motorcycles feature the new liquid-cooled Revolution X engine, a narrow, agile chassis with a low seat height (26.3 inches), new suspension, a wide handlebar and minimalist styling. Not all markets will get both engine sizes, but the U.S. will. The 500 costs $6700 and the 750 is $7500. Continue reading

Your Time in Iraq Makes You a Threat to Society

Army veteran Andrew Chambers recently shared the story of how he was sentenced to ten years in prison after a judge allegedly told him that his service in the Iraq war makes him a “threat to society.” Video of his speech from prison for TEDxMarionCorrectional’s TEDxTalks is now going viral after being posted on Oct. 31. After explaining that he decided to join the Army following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Chambers talked about the positive side of joining the U.S. military — traveling the world and experiencing different cultures. He was deployed to Iraq in 2004 after spending a year in Central America. Continue reading
