Bikers for Soldiers, the Iron Horse Bike Night and the Gospel Riders are reaching out to the community to help former Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Michele Labant by donating gift certificates for gas, for the endless commute she has to specialists, pet supplies for her K-9 service dog, monetary donations to help with medicals bills and donations from local businesses for lawn services, tree removal and snow removal at her Cherry Street home in Pottstown. Bikers for Soldiers is an organization dedicated to our servicemen and women who have served our country. For our fifth year we will be lending a hand to one of our local heroes who has been injured in the line of duty. Former Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Michele Labant served in Iraq with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 2006 and 2007. On July 18, 2011, while serving with the Guard in northern Afghanistan on convoy duty, she was injured by a blast from an improvised explosive device, or IED. As Labant and those in the truck with her were being transported from the scene, another IED exploded. Labant was not injured by the second blast, but it took the lives of three of her comrades. Labant, who was also a volunteer firefighter at North End before her injuries, was medically retired three years after the blast and awarded the Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge. She is now a civilian employee of the Pottstown Police Department and engaged to Bill Gallucci who she met during a tour in Iraq. He is still in the service and based in Connecticut, so his ability to get to Pottstown and help Labant remains limited. West Lawn-based Iron Warriors Foundation led by Kyle Hummel has helped pair Michele with a K-9 service dog to help her with the physical and mental injuries she suffered from war. Ever since that fateful day four years ago, Labant has been slowly recovering. “I’m still working with a trainer and I am still learning what my new normal is,” she said. “When I got hurt my goal was to return to active duty as soon as I could. I pushed so hard in recovery I fractured my leg.” Labant said her injuries included muscle damage to the left side of her back; severely diminished motor skills on the right side of her body; a hip, herniated disc in neck and a traumatic brain injury that affected the use of her right hand; and a dramatic loss of physical strength. “I still fall down and lose my balance a lot,” said Labant. Thank you in advance for your generosity, and your help at any level. Very best regards, Bikers For Solders & MJM Gospel Riders
