Warming Up A Harley-Davidson Motorcycle | Motorcyclist

Question: My next-door neighbor has a Harley. He also has the annoying habit of starting it in the driveway and letting it idle for 10 to 15 minutes before he takes off. I say annoying because his pipes rattle the windows in my house until he’s gone. I know there isn’t much chance of talking him out of the pipes—we’ve had the “loud pipes save lives” discussion before—but what can I do to convince him not to leave the bike idling for so long? I asked him about it once and all he said was, “It’s good for the bike.” Is it really? - Steve Dickens / San Ysidro, CA Answer: Continue reading

Directors Ramblings – Update on Rich Lanning

Had a good visit with Rich. He has come a long way and still a ways to go but getting better. They had him on his feet (with help) today and before I left they lifted him to a chair. I managed to get a smile out of him from time to time. What they get him out of bed with looks like what they use to pull engines out of cars. Rich has told me that he has some engineering changes he would like to do to the lift to make it better. Another example that he is getting better and in better spirits. Continue reading

Tilting Motor Works kit turns Harley-Davidson motorcycles into ‘reverse trikes’

The three-wheeled power-sports market is growing fast, driven largely by newbie bikers and aging riders attracted to big motorcycles but afraid of their heft and weight. Many love the stability of a three-wheeled machine, but an equal number are put off by the handling: Trikes don't lean when they corner. They steer, a little more like a car than a bike. Now the Seattle-based engineer behind Tilting Motor Works may have found the solution. Company founder Bob Mighell has developed a kit that will turn any Harley-Davidson cruiser into a "reverse trike" — two wheels in the front, one in back — that leans like a bike but won't fall over. The invention is timely. Harley-Davidson says its three-wheeled Freewheelers and Tri Glides represents the motorcycle giant's third-most-popular model. Sales of three-wheeled Can Am Spyders and Polaris Slingshots are up too. Continue reading

Motorcyclist Fatalities to Drop for 2nd Straight Year

Motorcyclist Fatalities Projected to Drop for 2nd Straight Year Preliminary data show a decrease, but fatality rates continue to outpace those of other motor vehicles WASHINGTON, D.C. – As hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists gather in Washington D.C. for the annual Rolling Thunder “Ride for Freedom” this Memorial Day Weekend, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) is projecting that motorcyclist fatalities decreased for the second straight year in 2014, based on preliminary state data. However, this latest Spotlight on Highway Safetyreport also notes that there is much more work to do: motorcyclist fatalities are 26 percent higher than a decade ago, while other motor vehicle fatalities are 28 percent lower.
